When is a construction supervisors license required?

A construction supervisor's license(CSL) is required whenever work involves construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, removal or demolition of certain building or structures, or parts therof except:

  • Any homeowner of a single or two family dwelling performing work for which a building permit is required and the homeowner is acting as the supervisor. This exception does not apply to non owner occupied dwellings or the construction/installation of a manufactured or modular home.
  • Construction or erection of swimming pools, signs or tents. A permit is still required.
  • Projects subject to construction control.
  • Registered design professionals provided the design professional provides construction oversite and supervision.
  • Massachusetts certfied building officials in good standing.
  • The practice of any trade licensed by agencies on the Commonwealth such as wiring, plumbing, gas fitting, HVAC etc provided that no building permit is also required for said work being performed.
